The medical clinic located on the premises of Casa para Ninos Shaloam in San Lucas,
Guatemala is nothing short of a testimony to the power of God. Constructed in less than five
months, with monies and labor from Cumberland Presbyterian Churches, the Cumberland
Presbyterian Board of Missions, individuals, and other various venues; God brought His plan
together in a remarkable way. We give special thanks to the Bartow Cumberland Presbyterian
Church in Bartow, Georgia, which was responsible for raising most of the money.
Now that God has built the clinic, we are watching how He is going to equip it with the medical
supplies, materials and equipment that will be needed. We have included the wish list of what
is needed. Soon, the Clinic will be open for seeing orphans, indigent people of San Lucas,
and even for surgeries. In the not too distant future, we plan to have the Clinic licensed for
surgery.
One of the most common surgeries that will be performed at the Clinic will be for cleft
pallets/cleft lips. This genetic defect is a rampant problem in Guatemala due to the inbreeding
that comes from the incest and rape by family members. (Thus, the need for orphanages like
Casa Shaloam.) If the children do not have surgery by the age of two, they have permanent
speech impediments.
Wendy will be on site living next to the Clinic and will be available, as she already is, for any
emergency situations that arise. Only now, she will be able to attend to most of them on site
rather than driving an hour away to a government run hospital.
It will require about $1500 (American) monthly to run the Clinic. Donations to this can be made
to New Hope notating on the “memo” line “Guatemalan Clinic.” One way to consider a
donation plan is regarding the cleft pallets mentioned. Each surgery can be performed for
about $25 (American). This is because of the generosity of the plastic surgeon that will be
donating his time and expertise to help these children. For every $25 donated, that is one cleft
pallet/lip reconstructed. For more information, contact Rev. Mindy Acton or Wendy Skinner.
